We also have one like that here in Denmark. Quite handy when you are looking for used cars, so you can look up the license plate from looking at the pictures of the car. With that you can see if it was imported, and when, if it had a specification change (in denmark, if you tune the car above 25% of its original HP it has to be re-registered, or if you turbo a non-turbo car for example, or do a engine swap), also if it had any remarks from the customs and taxes, or if it has failed the annual check (forgot what its called in english).

The name of the annual check depends on the country. Here it is the MoT (Ministry of Transport) Test, although they are now DoT (Department of Transport), the name has stuck.

I do use licence plate databases a lot though. Like a car I saw up for sale which was a manual 3.2 V6 with turbo, but was registered as a automatic 1.4 I4 N/A, so I ran a mile from that.

How smaller your engine is on paper, how cheaper the insurance will be But oh well, if they see it's a other engine in a crash, you are so screwed

Plus if you drive without insurance (or it is made void because you lied) here you get 6 points (half of what you're allowed) on your licence and a 5,000GBP (~8,000USD/~6,000EURO) fine. Which really doesn't make it worth while as 6 points on your licence will push up your premiums by a lot anyway. Which would suck.

But people are willing to take that risk to save a little money.
